Thanks to careful preparations and early solutions put in place, Vietnam has brought the novel coronavirus epidemic under control at a low cost, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam told the National Assembly in Hanoi on June 13th.

Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam says Vietnam has successfully controlled the novel coronavirus epidemic at a low cost

Addressing the legislature’s plenary session, Dam noted while the number of infections and deaths from COVID-19 keeps increasing globally, Vietnam has gone 58 days in a row without new cases in the community. He affirmed that living “a life like Vietnamese people today is the dream of many countries”.

"We have enjoyed this success because since the end of 2019, when the virus was not given an official name, the Government had consulted with international organizations to map out a basic anti-epidemic plan in accordance with the principles and experience against infectious diseases,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

According to Dam, Vietnam had introduced many earlier and stricter solutions than recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). When the WHO initially warned of limited virus transmission, Vietnam maintained that it was a highly infectious disease. It was also the first country to make health declarations compulsory for all people on entry.

“Many people raised doubts when the government had introduced epidemic countermeasures, but these measures later proved to be timely, resolute and highly effective. Therefore, Vietnam has successfully controlled the epidemic at a very low cost."

He attributed the initial success to the clear, firm and effective leadership of the Party and the State, as well as the participation of the entire political system, doctors, soldiers, police, other forces, and particularly people.

“I would like to say that whenever the country is faced with a great challenge, Vietnamese people’s spirit of national patriotism and pride and good values of the civilization over thousands of years are upheld and promoted, helping us achieve every success. Hopefully such spirit will continue to be fostered so that Vietnam will seize upon opportunities to elevate its position in the international arena and in various fields.”

The Deputy PM also informed the National Assembly that all foreigners infected with the virus in Vietnam have been treated and most of them have fully recovered and have been discharged from hospital. The last foreign patient, the critically ill British citizen, is recovering well after many days in coma thanks to concerted efforts by Vietnamese doctors.

“We are very lucky that we have not had so many infections, forcing us to choose who to save. But if we had got into such situation, we would have not abandoned foreigners instead of only taking care of Vietnamese people."

Dam also warned Vietnam still faces many great risks as the novel coronavirus pandemic is evolving in a complex manner globally. However, he said Vietnam does not choose to close the door, but to strive to realize the dual goal of epidemic prevention and economic recovery at the same time./.
