The press conference was chaired by Dr. Alan Bollard, Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat, and Dr. Denis Hew, Director of the APEC Policy Support Unit (PSU).

At the event, Dr. Alan Bollard affirmed that in 2017, the region is facing some economic, commercial and social challenges. In this context, the leaders will gather in Da Nang to discuss and launch initiatives to drive APEC member economies forward. He said that APEC leaders will focus on a number of key areas such as sustainable and inclusive development, human resources development and digital economy.

Dr. Denis Hew shared his research on development tendencies of APEC economies. He noted that GDP growth of APEC economies increased by 3.9%, higher than last year by 3.3%. From January to August 2017, exports also increased sharply in both quantity and quality. It is forecast that GDP of APEC member economies will increase by 3.8% by 2018.

Along with that, the advantages and disadvantages of the past years have not changed. One of the disadvantages is the declining trend of labour GDP in the APEC region, as jobs are replaced by robots and automation. In addition, globalization is another reason jobs are shifting from developed to developing countries.

When being interviewed about APEC 2018 in Papua New Guinea, Mr. Alan Bollard said that Papua New Guinea has prepared for APEC 2018 for two years and is working very closely with Vietnam to continue what Vietnam has done at APEC 2017, and according to the rules of the APEC Secretariat. However, due to cultural and political differences, the organization of Papua New Guinea will be somewhat different from Vietnam./.
