Black and white photos on German history introduced in Hanoi

Nearly 100 black and white photos by German photographer Barbara Klemm are on display at an exhibition “Hell-Dunkel” (Light-Dark), which opened at the Goethe Institute in Hanoi on October 17th.

The exhibition is being held by the Goethe Institute in Vietnam in coordination with the German Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa) to introduce to Hanoians the former Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, and Germany’s path to reunification.

Born in 1939, Barbara Klemm worked as a photo journalist for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) for over 40 years, overseeing many major political events. Today, her photos are regarded as icons of German 20th century history.

The photographer has worked exclusively with the analogue camera throughout her life. Her film is black and white and she even abstains from using flash. Klemm places her interest in people and focuses on social realities.

The exhibition will run at No.60 Nguyen Thai Hoc street, Ba Dinh district, until October 29th./.
