These days, Phung Hung viaduct in Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi, seems to be newer, more beautiful and colourful thanks to a mural art project.

The project is built on the foundation of the programme to bring arts to living space.  It is carried out on the east vaults of Phung Hung viaduct from Phung Hung – Le Van Linh T-junction to Hang Cot street.

There are 131 vaults along Phung Hung viaduct. Four of them were opened to serve transportation. The rest will be converted into public spaces for art and cultural activities.

The art space was approved by the city People’s Committee to highlight memories about Hanoi in the past and at present.

The murals not only beautify the viaduct, but also change the living space of people in surrounding areas.

The vaults, built in 1900 and finished in 1902, are 3.5m to 4.5m high and covers about 16sq.m area each.

The viaduct is part of the historic Long Bien bridge, which carries the rail connecting Hanoi with the northern port city of Hai Phong. It is considered an important part of Hanoi's development and history./.
