Prime Minister approves plan to conserve archaeological relics of Con Moong Cave

The Prime Minister has approved a plan to preserve and promote the value of archaeological relics of Con Moong Cave and surrounding monuments in Thach Thanh district, Thanh Hoa province.

The plan will exploit and promote the value of the relic for research and education, raising the community's sense of responsibility in preserving cultural heritage; sustainably exploit natural resources in association with environmental protection; develop sustainable tourism, contributing to hunger eradication, poverty reduction, improving people's intellectual and cultural and spiritual life and promoting local economic growth.

Discovered in 1974, Con Moong Cave has been excavated many times and is determined to be the first site ever in the country containing traces of the continuous habitation of ancient humans from the Paleolithic period to the Neolithic period.

It was recognised as a Special National Archaeological Site by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for its historic values.

The cave is on a karst mountain, which belongs to the Dong Giao geological layer dating back to 240 million years ago./.
