UNESCO adopts profile on Vietnamese celebrity Chu Van An’s death anniversary

The profile on marking the 650th death anniversary of Vietnamese celebrity Chu Van An in 2020 was adopted on April 16th by the 206th session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), together with 48 others among 71 profiles nominated by 41 countries.

The profiles were nominated in accordance with UNESCO criteria which suits the organization’s ideal and missions in education, culture, science, and information communications, contributing to promoting peace, cultural dialogues and mutual understanding among nations. Each person nominated must have wide influence and be well-known outside his/her country.

Chu Van An (1292-1370) is considered a teacher of all eras, an eminent Vietnamese teacher who spent his whole life for education, with humanitarian educational philosophy, leaving influence on generations of Vietnamese people and contributing to developing humanitarian values in the region. His educational viewpoint holds progressive values and is close to the current educational purposes in the world that UNESCO summarizes.

UNESCO adoption of the profile on marking the 650th death anniversary of Chu Van An confirms the appreciation of the international community for Vietnamese cultural and educational values, while promoting equality in education for all and the life long study spirit that UNESCO is following.

As planned, the 40th UNESCO General Assembly in November will officially issue a resolution on anniversaries of events and celebrities of the world.

The Vietnamese delegation, led by Le Hoai Trung, Party Central Committee member, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the UNESCO Vietnam National Committee, attended the important activities of the UNESCO Executive Board session from April 3rd-17th.

Earlier, UNESCO honoured Vietnamese celebrities in marking the 600th birthday of Nguyen Trai (1980), 100th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh (1990) and 250th birthday of Nguyen Du (2015)./.
