Maritime security high on Seoul Defence Dialogue’s agenda

Maritime security is among the issues drawing much attention at the ongoing 8th vice-ministerial Seoul Defence Dialogue in the Republic of Korea (RoK), according to Deputy Defence Minister, Sen. Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the annual event focuses on security in the Asia-Pacific region, especially issues emerging in certain periods.

At this year’s dialogue, the peace issue in the Korean Peninsula will be the first to be on the agenda, Sen. Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh said. He noted that that results attained in recent years, including the summits between the US and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in Vietnam and Singapore, along with difficulties on the path to genuine peace and complete denuclearization in the Korean Peninsula will be discussed.

Maritime security is the next topic attracting defence officials’ attention at the event as many of them are concerned about international law of the sea being violated seriously, the use of force and militarization of common sea areas in the world, which have infringed coastal countries’ rights and adversely affected peace and stability in Asia-Pacific.

Oil-gas cooperation plays key role to Vietnam – Russia ties

At their meeting on September 5th, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung and his Russian counterpart Maxim Akimov agreed that oil and gas cooperation bears strategic significance to Vietnam – Russia relations.

The event is under the framework of the ongoing 5th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF). 

On this occasion, the two officials shared their opinions on the implementation of the two countries’ joint projects and agreements.

They said that bilateral cooperation is going smoothly across all fields and highlighted the need for effective measures to capitalize on the potential of both countries and of the Eurasian Economic Union – Vietnam Free Trade Agreement toward realizing the USD10 billion bilateral trade goal in 2020.

The Deputy PM affirmed that Vietnam welcomes Russia’s oil and gas companies to implement exploration and exploitation activities in the country’s continental shelf in line with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Vietjet Air signs deal to launch of direct flights to Russia’s Far East

 A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the new-age carrier Vietjet Air and Russia’s Vladivostok International Airport (VVO) on September 5th to open direct flights between the two countries.

The deal will combine the VVO’s strengths in facilities and operational experience and Vietjet’s flight network and quality air services to create best benefits for passengers, said Aleksei Vasilchenko, President of Vladivostok International Airport.

It is expected to boost trade and investment and satisfy demand for travel and freight services between the two nations through the launch of more flights in the near future.

The cooperation will pave the way for the airline’s plan to open services to Russia in 2020 that will benefit millions of Vietnamese people and flyers from regional countries, said Vietjet Air Deputy Director General Do Xuan Quang.

Vietnam draws Thailand in goalless qualifier for World Cup 2022

Vietnam drew Thailand 0-0 in its first World Cup 2022 qualifier in Thailand’s Pathum Thani province on September 5th.

With this result, both team clinched one point each in Group G.

The Golden Stars will take on Malaysia in Hanoi in the third round match next month.

Vietnam has been drawn in Group G with regional rivals Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as group favorites the United Arab Emirates (UAE)./.
