RoK retains position as Vietnam’s leading source of FDI

Among the 74 countries and territories investing in Vietnam, the Republic of Korea is the biggest foreign investor with a total investment of USD2,752.9 million during the first ten months of the year, accounting for 21.5 per cent of all newly-registered capital, according to the General Statistics Office.

Following the RoK, China is the second largest foreign investor in Vietnam with USD2,115.6 million, trailed by Singapore (USD1,839.8 million), the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China (USD1,639.1 million), and Japan (USD1,630.8 million).

According to VOV, from early this year to October 20th, the country draw 3,094 newly-licensed projects capitalized at more than USD12,833 million, up 25.9 per cent in terms of the number of projects, and down 14.6 per cent in the registered capital against the same period last year.

Throughout the reviewed period, the newly-registered and additionally foreign capital suffered a drop of 15.2 per cent to USD18,302.4 million on-year while USD16.2 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) was disbursed for the 10-month period, up 7.4 per cent.

Vietnam greets record foreigner arrivals in October

Vietnam’s tourism industry welcomed the highest-ever international tourist arrivals of nearly 1.62 million in October, a year-on-year rise of 3.43%, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO). This month also saw the fastest tourism growth in 2019.

Also according to statistics, the number of foreigners to the country totaled nearly 14.5 million in the Jan-Oct period, a year-on-year rise of 13%. Of these, travelers from China and the Republic of Korea made up nearly 56% of the total.

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism said that this is impressive growth, much higher than the average rate of the world and the region. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) reported that international tourist arrivals grew 4% in the first half of 2019. Growth was led by the Middle East (8%) and Asia and the Pacific (6%), in which Southeast Asia increased 5%.

Deputy FM makes phone call to British official over lorry deaths

Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung has thanked the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and relevant agencies of the UK for their active support and sharing of information related to lorry deaths in Essex with Vietnam.

According to VNA, in his phone call to Minister for Asia and the Pacific at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Heather Wheeler on October 29th, Dung appreciated British agencies for their assistance in accelerating the identification of the victims in the tragedy in which 39 people were found dead in the container truck in Essex county of the UK on October 23rd.

He also proposed the UK side help Vietnam to implement the protection of citizens if there are Vietnamese victims in the incident.

Wheeler affirmed that the British side is making every effort to identify nationalities and names of the victims, and ready to work closely with relevant sides to quickly complete the identification process.

The two officials affirmed to continue working together closely, while strongly condemning the trafficking of humans and showing the determination to fight transnational organised crime rings that organise illegal migration.

They also agreed to call on the international community to strengthen cooperation and resolutely combat this kind of crime./.
