These are the first fresh lychees of the year going through the irradiation treatment in Hanoi, reducing time and costs for export enterprises. The total shipment amounts to 1.2 tons and was grown in Thanh Ha district, Hai Duong province.

Director of the department's plant quarantine centre Le Nhat Thanh said irradiation prices of the Hanoi Irradiation Centre are about VND8,000 per kilogram, much lower than that of centres in Ho Chi Minh city (about VND13,000-VND15,000 per kilogram).

According to preliminary calculation, irradiation in Hanoi and exporting directly from the northern region will help traders save millions of VND per ton.

Irradiation is considered a safe technology that helps to kill all bacteria and microorganisms, and keep fruit fresh for longer periods, even up to a few months. Key fruit importers such as Australia, Canada and the United States require fruit to be irradiated before entered their borders.

In 2016, due to the late licensing from Australia, Vietnam only irradiated 30 tons of lychees, while this year, about 100 tons are expected to go through the irradiation treatment and to be exported to the market./.
