Agro-forestry and fishery exports hit USD8.8 billion

Export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products totaled USD3.3 billion in March 2019, bringing the sector’s value in the first three months to USD8.8 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 2.9%, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Exports of major agricultural products were valued at USD4.2 billion, down 13.4%; seafood fetched USD1.8 billion, up 0.5%; major forestry products reached USD2.4 billion, up 16.5%.

In the quarter, commodities seeing significant export growth were tea (15.4%), rubber (18.5)%, tra fish (10%), and bamboo products (37.7%).

However, many key agricultural products saw sharp reduction. Typically, the volume of exported rice reached an estimated 1.43 million tons, valued at USD593 million, down 3.5% in volume and down 20.2% in value from a year earlier.

The domestic fruit market witnessed a sign of recovery after a two-month decrease because the harvest time in China concurred with the harvest of some Vietnamese fruits. But, export value of fruits and vegetables still declined 9.3% compared to the same period last year, worth USD879 million.

Meanwhile, import value of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in the three months posted USD7.25 billion, a year-on-year increase of 4.6%. With these, trade surplus of the sector hit USD1.55 billion./.
