In 2017, the output of watermelons nationwide reached about 1.5 million tons with the majority of them being harvested in northern localities (Hai Duong, Nam Dinh, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho), south central provinces (Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen) and the Mekong Delta.

Watermelons are mainly consumed in the domestic market, accounting for about 80%, while exports make up about 20%, in which watermelons shipped to China occupy 85-90% of the total.

At the event, participants focused on discussing advantages and disadvantages in production and consumption of watermelons and other farm products; proposing petitions and solutions to promote the production and consumption.

From April 1st, the Chinese side requested that fruits imported from Vietnam to China through border gates in Guangxi be traceable to their source, thus, the Ministry of Industry and Trade asked enterprises and co-operatives to satisfy the process of producing safe farm produce; meeting the requirements of the market.

On this occasion, the Ministry and Quang Ngai People’s Committee witnessed the signing of cooperative deals for the consumption of watermelons and other farm products./.
