CPI inches up 0.1% in January

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the first month of 2019 increased 0.1% from the previous month, reported General Statistics Office (GSO).

Specifically, price of beverage and cigarette group soared 0.69%. Restaurant and catering services had price rise of 0.66%, in which food increased 0.52% and foodstuff rose 0.85%. Clothing, hats and footwear group surged 0.39%.

Other groups had price index increases, including housing and building material group (0.35%), household utensil and home appliances (0.16%), education (0.15%), medicine and health services (0.01%), other commodities and services (0.34%).

Two groups seeing price index declines were transport (3.04%) and post and telecommunications (0.09%).

According to GSO, January is ahead of Tet holiday, thus the consumption demand rises sharply. However, the CPI only inched up because the country prepared abundant commodities for the holiday.

This month, gold price soared 2.25% from the previous month and 0.13% year on year. Meanwhile, the USD price decreased 0.4% from the previous month and increased 2.32% year on year./.
