Export growth of wooden products is expected to be maintained at double digits and reach USD10.5 billion in 2019, according to the judgment of Mr. Nguyen Ton Quyen, Vice Chairman of Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association, at a seminar held on February 21st in Hanoi.

He said 2018 was a successful year for the Vietnam wood processing and export industry. Export turnover of wooden products reached more than USD8.9 billion, a year-on-year rise of 14.5%.

Notably, only 25% of material for wood processing was imported. Domestic enterprises made up 53% of total export turnover of wood and wooden products.

In spite of growing rapidly, the industry still faces shortcomings that hinder sustainable development. Factors resulting in unsustainability are seen in export categories and input wood material sources.

Aiming to help the industry maintain export growth, Mr. Quyen said that for the long-term strategy, it is necessary to convert from raw products to high-value added products.

Growth should focus on increasing not only quantity, but also quality. This requires synchronous change in all different stages, especially high-quality human resources training, image design development and trademark building, he added./.
