Forum discusses opportunities for businesses in digital economy

(CPV) - The scale of the digital economy is growing rapidly, occupying less than 4% of the global economy in 2016 but being expected to expand to 40% by 2020, a 10 fold increase.

This information was revealed in the Businesses in Digital Economy Forum and the launch of Vietnam Business Annual Report 2017/2018, held by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry on May 17th, in Hanoi.

Dr. Vu Tien Loc, VCCI Chairman, said that economies worldwide are now driving forward by digital technology which should be the top priority in Vietnam.

According to reports of Google and Temasek, the digital economy in ASEAN saw breakthrough growth with annual rate of 27% and reached USD50 billion in 2017, accounting for about 2% of regional GDP. This figure is expected to hit 6% in 2025. Sectors which made contributions to the growth are online tourism, e-commerce, media and online entertainment.

He stressed that Vietnam is being assessed as one of the countries with great potential to develop the digital economy, and the digital trend has appeared in most sectors such as commerce, payment, transport, education and health.

In his speech about impacts of the digital economy on activities of businesses, Mr. Bui The Duy, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, said that businesses can not miss development opportunities from taking advantages of digital technology.

According to assessments of experts, Vietnamese businesses should take advantage of the digital economy to improve the effectiveness of business, expand markets and market share, even enter new markets. In addition, the digital economy will also create driving force for small and medium-sized businesses to develop stronger and become the key motive power for economic growth.

Also at the event, the 12th Vietnam Business Annual Report, themed “Developing businesses in the digital economy”, was launched to point out existing problems and obstacles with the hope of being improved to help businesses operate better./.
