Industrial production surges 9.7% in five months

The Industrial production index (IPI) rose 9.7% in the first five months of 2018, much higher than the 6.6% recorded in the same period last year, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

Of this, processing and manufacturing continued to grow 11.8%, contributing 9 percentage points to the overall growth. However, the important production sector saw slow growth tendency with 15.5% in first two months, 14.1% in three months and 12.5% in four months.

Electricity generation and distribution increased 10.6%, contributing 0.9 percentage points; water supply and sewage treatment soared 6%, contributing 0.1 percentage points; mining decreased 2.2%, lessening 0.3% percentage points.

In the five months, most provinces and centrally-governed cities saw increases in the index, such as Hai Phong (23.8%), Bac Ninh (22.2%), Thai Nguyen (12.1%) and Vinh Phuc (11.7%).

As of May 1st, 2018, the number of employees working in industrial enterprises increased 3.8% from the same period last year./.
