Ngoc Linh ginseng granted geographical indication protection

The Departments of Science and Technology of Kon Tum and Quang Nam are managers for the geographical indication. Geographical areas of the Vietnamese ginseng include Mang Ri and Ngoc Lay communes in Tu Mo Rong district, Kon Tum province and Tra Linh commune in Nam Tra My district, Quang Nam province. These communes belong to Ngoc Linh mountain at an altitude between 1,800 and 2,500 meters.

The certificate for the geographical indication showed the nature, quality and characteristics in geographical conditions and production techniques and processes of the product.

Ms. Tran Thi Tuyet, Director of the Kon Tum provincial Department of Science and Technology, said the geographical indication license opened more prospects for both Kon Tum and Quang Nam provinces, because Ngoc Linh ginseng can be introduced in domestic and international markets in large amounts without losing its geographic origin and characteristics linked with the quality and name of the product.

Currently, the two localities are actively expanding the growing area of Vietnamese ginseng and plan to plant many hectares around Ngoc Linh mountain. For Kon Tum alone, more than 180 hectares of the product are being planted./.
