The Noi Bai international airport announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mitteldeutsche Airport Holding Company, a management and operation unit of Germany’s Leipzig/Halle airport.

The agreement signing ceremony

The agreement creates the framework for long-term cooperation in the fields of market and strategy development, with a major focus on e-commerce and an exchange of experiences and information as well as personnel. Geared towards the long term, the cooperation arrangement aims to establish and expand air freight traffic between the two airports.

Leipzig/Halle airport has the second largest air cargo volume in Germany and the fifth largest in Europe. It handles more than 1.14 million tonnes per annum and will continue to develop as a multimodal e-commerce hub during the next few years.

The signing of the MoU is linked to the traditionally good relations between Vietnam and the Central German region, which go back to the 1950s and therefore provide a promising basis for intensive and trusting cooperation between the Hanoi and Leipzig/Halle airports.

In 2017, cargo volume exported to Europe from Noi Bai airport reached an estimated more than 63,000 tons, making up about 25% of the airport’s total volume. However, cargoes shipped to the region mainly transit through Hong Kong (China) or Middle East, increasing logistics fees.

Therefore, the opening of direct cargo flights to Europe is expected to contribute to cutting logistics fees as a basis to boost growth of air cargo volume and attract more foreign investment./.
