China has remained the main export market for Vietnamese shrimp over the past 5 years, with an average growth of 16% per year and an increase of over 55%, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) has reported.

According to VASEP, from 2015 to 2019, Vietnam's shrimp industry achieved positive results in production and exports with an average growth rate of 4% per year.
In particular, on average, the shrimp farming area increased by 1.4% per year, with an increase in productivity of 5.7% per year, mainly thanks to improved white-leg shrimp farming productivity. Notably, the productivity of white-leg shrimp increased by 41% in 5 years.
During the 2015-2019 period, Vietnam exported 81-85% of shrimp to the EU, the US, Japan, China, and the Republic of Korea (RoK). Of which, the greatest export increase was in the Chinese market, with average annual growth of 16%, and of over 55% in the whole period, followed by the EU and the RoK.
Frozen shrimp products still account for a large proportion of the shrimp export. Processed shrimp accounted for a significant proportion in only some major markets, including the US, the EU, Japan, and the RoK.
In the main markets, Vietnam's shrimp products enjoy more preferential import tax than those from Indonesia, India, Thailand or China, especially in markets that have free trade agreements with Vietnam. This will be an advantage for Vietnam's shrimp exports in 2020 and the years to come./.
