US Embassy donates scanner to Vietnam Customs

(CPV) - The Embassy of the US has donated a scanner worth nearly USD200,000 to the General Department of Customs of Vietnam in order to increase control of goods imported into Vietnam by air.

The hand-over ceremony was held on September 24th at the headquarters of the Noi Bai International Airport’s Customs Department.

Mr. Daniel Kritenbrink, US Ambassador to Vietnam, said the scanner will allow cargo to be scanned directly from aircraft without dismantling, thereby speeding up the scanning and custom clearance of packages.

Earlier, on September 10th-14th, a training course was held for officials of the Noi Bai International Airport’s Customs Department to provide basic knowledge in image analysis for the scanner.

In his speech at the event, Mr. Hoang Viet Cuong, Deputy Head of the General Department of Customs, expressed sincere thanks to the US Embassy for actively supporting Vietnam Customs, while looking forward to continuing receiving cooperation and assistance from the US in improving and modernizing Customs.  

According to the US Embassy, the scanner delivery is part of the Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) Program, which is designed to help countries develop and improve their strategic trade and related border control systems./.
