Vegetable and fruit exports hit USD3.1 billion

Export value of vegetables and fruits in September 2018 reached an estimated USD380 million, bringing the figure for the first nine months of the year to USD3.1 billion, a year-on-year rise of 17.1%, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Vietnamese mangoes favored in foreign markets

China ranked first among importers of Vietnam’s fruits and vegetables in the first eight months of the year with a 74.1% share of the market, valued at nearly USD2 billion, up 11.6% over a year earlier. Markets seeing sharp value growth are Thailand (37.9%), Australia (36%), the US (26.3%), and the Republic of Korea (21.4%).

Meanwhile, imports of the commodity were valued at USD156 million in September, bringing the total value for the first nine months of the year to USD1.3 billion, up 12.7% over a year earlier. Of this, import value of vegetables posted USD330 million, up 35.9%, while those of fruits was USD911 million, up 0.8%.

Vietnam mainly imported vegetables and fruits from Thailand (45% of the market) and China (21.9%).

Growth was seen in most markets, such as the Republic of Korea (93.8%), the US (83.5%) and Australia (72.7%). However, two markets witnessed value reduction; Thailand (-16.6%) and Myanmar (-13.4%)./.
