(CPV) - Vietnam’s Ca Pass tunnel, the country’s most modern tunnel route linking Khanh Hoa and Phu Yen provinces, officially opened to traffic on the morning of August 21st.

The project, designed to withstand up to magnitude 7 earthquakes, took six years to complete and was built under public-private partnership (PPP) with a total investment of around VND15,300 billion.

“The Ca Pass tunnel on the North-South National Highway No.1 will facilitate the development of industry, services, and tourism in the Central coastal region. Apart from connecting regional industrial zones and tourism hubs, it will also contribute to the security and defence of the central and Central Highlands regions, as well as reducing accidents and traffic congestion”, said Deputy Minister of Transport Le Dinh Tho.

He also hailed Deo Ca Investment Joint Stock Company and sub-contractors for their efforts in implementing this project, saying that the tunnel should reduce travel time for vehicles by 80 percent, to 10 minutes. Vehicles using the tunnel can avoid rockslides, which often occur in rainy season.

With a total length of 13.19 kilometres, the Ca Pass tunnel consists of the 4.125-kilometer Ca Pass tunnel and the existing 500-meter Co Ma tunnel. The two-lane tunnel (each side 9.8m in diameter) is said to be installed with the most modern equipment in the nation. Bridges and roads leading to the two tunnels have a combined length of over nine kilometres.

According to Mr Le Quynh Mai, Vice Head of Deo Ca Investment Joint Stock Company, vehicles are allowed to travel at a maximum speed of 80km per hour. From now to early September, usage is free of charge.

As planned, the investor has 28 years of tolling rights, but is expected to reduce the total time after talks with the Transport Ministry./.
