Vietnam - France trade surplus exceeds USD2 billion

(CPV) - Vietnam’s trade surplus with France reached more than USD2 billion in Jan-Oct 2018, equivalent to that of all of 2017.

According to the latest statistics of General Department of Customs, in the 10 months, total export and import commodity value between the two countries posted USD4.2 billion, a year-on-year rise of 10.%. Of this, exports were valued at USD3.1 billion, up 11.2% and imports reached USD1.09 billion, up 7.1%.

Vietnam’s major export commodities are telephone and devices, valued at USD1.09 billion; garments and textiles USD503 million; footwear USD410 million; computer, electronic products and components USD189 million; wood and wooden products USD100 million and seafood USD90.5 million.  

Conversely, Vietnam mainly imported pharmaceutical products (USD258 million); machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts (USD160 million); and transport and accessories (USD133 million).

France is now one of the leading trade partners of Vietnam in Europe, with bilateral commodity exchange turnover being estimated at USD4.62 billion. It is also one of the biggest export markets of Vietnam.

On October 17th, the European Commission agreed to submit the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to the European Council for approval. The agreement is expected to be signed in the end of 2018 and will be submitted to the European Parliament in 2019. Once valid, it will create new impetus for economic, trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and the EU in general and Vietnam and France in particular, in the coming time./.
