According to the ministry, Vietnam’s dairy farming plays an important role in gradually forming a modern dairy and processing industry compared to other countries in the region and the world.

So far, Vietnam has risen to 6th place in Asia on milk output and 4th place on dairy cow productivity. In 2018, total revenue of dairy industry reached VND109 trillion. The rate of chain link in dairy farming accounts for nearly 100%, the highest in agricultural production.

At the event, participants said that the potential for the domestic market is very great, with consumption of dairy products reaching 27kg per person in 2018. The figure is forecast to hit 28kg in 2020.

Tong Xuan Chinh, deputy head of the Livestock Production Department, said dairy cow farming is most developed in the southeast region with 98,000 head, accounting for over 33% of the country’s dairy cow herd, and in Nghe An, Ho Chi Minh City, Son La and Hanoi.

However, the industry still faces many challenges, as Vietnam has not been permitted to export dairy products to the European market and the country still has to import a large amount of milk and dairy products to serve domestic consumption./.
