APEC member economies should focus on investing in services to reflect more exactly the development tendency of the global digital economy, said Jane Drake-Brockman, leader of the ASEAN service provision alliance.

According to Vietnam News Agency, she made the statement during a meeting on digital technology in the Asia - Pacific region in Malaysia on October 2nd.

She stressed that on average, services account for over 50% of GDP in an economy. However, many APEC member economies only focus on exploitation and agricultural production, while the others focus on manufacturing.

According to Ms Jane Drake-Brockman, competition in services influences most other areas.

She appreciated Malaysia’s initiatives in increasing competitiveness in services, showing her hope that APEC member economies will focus on services.

Earlier, Secretary-General of the Malaysian Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) J. Jayasiri said that many Malaysian businesses had applied digital technology in their operations, which relates to Internet marketing, trans-border digital trade and electronic logistics./.
