APEC helps raise Vietnam’s position and role in international arena

During a conference entitled “APEC Vietnam 2017: Opportunities for regional development” held in Russia on November 1st by the Center for the Study of Vietnam and ASEAN, delegates who are leading research experts on Vietnam, APEC and Asia, agreed that Vietnam had gained opportunities to reinforce its role in the region since its APEC membership.

During the conference, the delegates focused their discussion on Vietnam’s achievements during over 30 years of renewal process, as well as its foreign policies and integration into the regional and world economy.

In his presentation, Assoc. Prof. Oksana Novakova from the Lomonosov Moscow State University said that since beginning its renewal process in 1986, Vietnam had rapidly joined the world community as a developing nation with more free economic policies, willing to cooperate with all partners, and arising as a potential political leader in Southeast Asia.

Vietnam has not only focused on economic cooperation, but also increased coordination to maintain security in the region. Peace and development are the two main orientations in Vietnam’s current foreign policies, according to Assoc. Prof. Oksana Novakova.

She added that APEC 2017 is one of the most important political event of Vietnam over the past several years, which confirms Vietnam’s active international integration, thus increasing Vietnam’s role and position on the international arena, and promoting the image of Vietnam as a dynamic, hospitable and safe developing country.

Sharing his idea, expert Anna Aksenova, a lecturer from the Lomonosov Moscow State University, said Vietnam’s economy is proving its dynamic development, with the high GDP growth rate. Notably, key investors in Vietnam come from APEC member economies.

Talking with Vietnam News Agency, Vladimir Mazyrin, Director of the Center for the Study of Vietnam and ASEAN, said that the conference aimed to introduce Vietnam and APEC, including the discussion on APEC Summit’s agenda, Vietnam’s priorities as a host, and seek areas where Vietnam and Russia can share benefits and work together during APEC.

Vietnam hosts APEC 2017 after its first hosting of APEC in 2006, which shows the fact that Vietnam in general and its economic achievements are appreciated, said Mr. Mazyrin, adding that after joining APEC, Vietnam has more and more opportunities to reinforce its influence and role in the Asia Pacific region, together its dynamic economic development./.
