Six US peace activists were awarded with the “For peace and friendship among nations” medals during a ceremony held on July 11th by the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) recognising their active contributions Vietnam.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Nguyen Tam Chien, VUFO Vice President, presented the medals to Frank Joyce and his wife Mary Anne Barnet; Judy Gumbo Albert; Alex Hing; Karin Aguilar-San Juan; and Douglas Hostetter.

Addressing the ceremony, Ambassador Chien said that the US friends belonged to the “Vietnam war generation” who had devoted their youth to protesting the war in Vietnam in the 1960s and 1970s. At present, despite their old age, they continue to be close with Vietnam and deserve the title “soldiers of peace” as well as that of ambassadors of friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and the US.

“They participated in and mobilized many others to join demonstrations and activities to show solidarity with Vietnam and demand the withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam,” said Mr. Chien.

Mr. Chien also confirmed that Vietnamese people always remember and show gratitude with US friends who stood side by side with Vietnam to struggle for the end of the war and for peace in Vietnam.

Speaking on behalf of the activists, Frank Joyce asserted that the US peace activists’ work aimed to further increase the solidarity and friendship between the two peoples. He and his friends pledged to continue to work for the development of bilateral relations between the US and Vietnam.

On the same day, receiving the delegation of US peace activists, VUFO President Nguyen Phuong Nga expressed her thanks to the delegation members for their great contributions to Vietnam, confirming the respect over the US friends’ affection for Vietnam during its struggle for peace and national unification earlier, as well as the current national construction. She also urged the delegation members to continue to care for developing the relationship between the two countries, and encourage the US Government to be responsible for helping Vietnam overcome the consequences of the war, thus making contributions to boosting the bilateral relationship for long-term benefits.

On this occasion, the Vietnamese version of the book “The people make the peace” written by Karin Aguilar-San Juan and Frank Joyce was launched, collecting the thoughts of war protestors in the Vietnam war period about the role of the struggle over 40 years ago./
