The Steering Committee of Military Zone 9 of the Vietnam People’s Army and Cambodia’s Kandal provincial specialised committee, on September 20th signed a plan to cooperate in continued search and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in the 2016-2017 dry season.

This will be the 16th phase of the search and repatriation since 2000.
During a meeting with the Kandal provincial authorities before the signing ceremony, Major-General Phan Hoang Thu, Deputy Head of the Vietnamese Steering Committee, said that throughout 15 phases of searching across 10 Cambodian provinces and cities, soldiers of Military Zone 9 had gathered 6,604 sets of remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts. In Kandal alone, 1,081 sets of remains had been found. There remain some 4,500 sets of remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts sacrificing during wars in Cambodia which have not been found.
Major-General Phan Hoang Thu expressed his thanks to Cambodian authorities, forces and people for their devoted coordination with the Vietnamese side to provide accurate information and guide the Vietnamese soldiers in realising their tasks.
Mao Phirun, Governor of Kandal province, appreciated the results achieved by the two sides in searching for the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers. According to the Governor, to make the search more effective, authorised agencies should disseminate information about the search, the signed agreements between the Vietnamese and Cambodian Governments, as well as the action plans of the specialised committees of the two countries, among the authority at all levels and among the people.
On behalf of Kandal province’s authority and people, Governor Mao Phirun expressed his deep gratitude with the Vietnamese Party, Government, volunteer soldiers and people for helping Cambodia destroy the Pol Pot genocidal regime, bringing peace and stability in Cambodia./.
