On November 20th, the Ministry of National Defence handed over the State President’s decisions to two officers to assign them to take on duty at the United Nations’ peace-keeping mission in South Sudan.

Under the decision, Major Tran Duc Huong and Captain Nguyen Phuc Dong will serve as military observers at the South Sudan mission, bringing the total number of Vietnamese officers at the mission to five.

Handing the decision to the two officers, Senior Lieutenant General Pham Ngoc Minh, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, expressed his belief that the two officers will unite and do their utmost to realize the missions. He also urged them to abide by the rules of the UN peace-keeping mission and local laws and customs.

Receiving the decision, Major Tran Duc Huong shared his feeling that the duty is both an honour and a challenge. “We are proud of directly participating in the UN humanitarian activities, contributing to bringing peace and stability in countries that still report conflicts,” he said.

According to Senior Lieutenant General Pham Ngoc Minh, over the past 4 years, the nation has dispatched 27 officers to UN peace-keeping missions in Central Africa and South Sudan. In October, Vietnam, for the first time, sent a level-2 field hospital to South Sudan./.
