Important premises
Recently, at a meeting with the Standing Board of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, Politburo member and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc supported 4 projects of the new development model of Ho Chi Minh City, including the project forming Thu Duc city on the model of a city-governed city. Thu Duc City will cover 22,000 hectares, equivalent to one tenth of the area of HCM City with a population of more than 1 million people.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Le Ninh (former lecturer of University of Science and Technology – Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), the strategy of building satellite towns in Ho Chi Minh City has been nurtured and patiently proposed by many generations of leaders, and is the right direction in the current context.
Deputy Head of the Office of the HCM city Department of Planning – Architecture Huynh Xuan Thu said that the establishment of Thu Duc city (East of Ho Chi Minh City) is based on sufficient infrastructure conditions from Districts 2, 9 and Thu Duc. Of this, for transportation, the area has the axis of Hanoi highway (connecting the Highway 1 with the center of the city), Pham Van Dong Avenue, Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, Saigon 1 and Saigon 2 Bridges, Thu Thiem 1 and Thu Thiem 2 Bridges (expected to open to traffic in 2021).
In addition, there is also the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh city, the hi-tech park with the world’s leading technology groups such as Intel, Nidec, Samsung and Jabil. Specifically, Thu Thiem new urban area is being oriented to be a regional and international financial center.
Doctor Truong Minh Huy Vu, Director of the Software Technology Zone under the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, said that the above premises are very important for the southern hub to consider the feasibility of the establishment of Thu Duc city.
New growth axis of the city
Ho Chi Minh City gives priority to calling and selecting foreign investors, the leading technology, finance and real estate groups of the world, to invest in the construction of Thu Duc city.
Director of the city Department of Planning and Investment Le Thi Huynh Mai said that the department is consulting with the city People’s Committee on criteria to select investors as well as investment forms under the Investment Law and Public-Private Partnership. Therefore, mobilizing investment resources must strictly comply with provisions of Law but be still attractive to domestic and foreign investors.
Chairman of the city People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong said that Thu Duc city is a new urban development model which not only forms a strong developing nucleus but also significantly contributes to the development of the region and the whole country.
Accordingly, Thu Duc city is expected to contribute one third of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of Ho Chi Minh City, equivalent to about 70% of the country’s gross domestic product.
“Ho Chi Minh City hopes that the establishment of Thu Duc city will create a new growth driver based on innovation, high-tech science and high-quality human resources, thereby contributing to the improvement of competitiveness and position of Vietnam in the international arena," Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong emphasized./.
