Flooding reduction is one of the seven key programs of the city, which needs over VND96.3 trillion in investment. Some VND22.95 trillion has been disbursed in the 2011-2015 period.

An increase of investment from domestic and foreign resources is considered an effective solution in the condition of limited budget, contributing to boosting the city’s sustainable development.

So far, only nearly 4,200 of 6,000 kilometres of sewers, four main water sewerage gates, two of 12 wastewater treatment plants, some 64 of 149 kilometres of dykes around Saigon River, and 1 of 10 sewers controlling tides have been completed, while the other constructions are ongoing, which requires a large amount of capital for continued flooding prevention and waste water treatment projects.

During the meeting, the city People’s Committee called on investment in 17 flooding prevention projects, including seven waste water collection and treatment plants; six projects upgrading and dredging canals; three dyke projects and sewers controlling tides, and one project on applying new waste water treatment technology at the Binh Hung waste treatment plant.

According to delegates, the city should consider other effective solutions, including developing space for rain water, using underground lake technology, and managing water in dense urban areas.

International investors also shared effective solutions in flooding prevention and waste water treatment from the Netherlands and the Republic of Korea, and financial solutions from the Asian Development Bank./.
