In 1994, the Prime Minister chose Dung Quat as the destination to invest in Vietnam’s first oil refinery facility.

From 2006 to 2010, the oil refinery projects and some other large-scale projects were carried out, establishing an economic zone with a capital of over USD4 billion, being a decisive factor to create a breakthrough for Quang Ngai province’s industrial productivity, export turnover and State budget collection. It also helped Quang Ngai become one of the 10 provinces reporting the largest amount of State budget collection of the country.

The 2011-2015 period marked a period of investment attraction to the economic zone. So far, 132 projects have invested in the zone with a registered capital of some USD10.5 billion; and 82 projects are operational with a capital of some USD5 billion.

In 2015, the economic zone produced the industrial, commercial and service value of VND87.6 trillion, reported export turnover of USD230 million, saw goods exchange through Dung Quat Port estimated at 16 million tons, and collected over VND24 trillion for the State budget, as well as creating jobs for over 15,000 laborers.

Standing Deputy Chairman of the Quang Ngai provincial People’s Committee Dang Van Minh, addressing the ceremony, said that in the 20 years since its establishment, the Dung Quat Economic Zone had been assessed as one of the successful economic zones of the country, gradually becoming a nucleus for growth and a key urban, industrial and service center of central Vietnam.

He asked the zone authority to give consultancy to authorised agencies in order to strongly improve the investment environment, mobilise investment capital sources and exploit the infrastructure of the economic zone; and train and attract talents and human resources, especially managers and hi-tech staff.

The province’s leader stressed the need to complete important infrastructure constructions in the zone; support investors developing the projects; and expand the Dung Quat oil refinery factory, the Quang Ngai Vietnam - Singapore Industrial Park and the Dung Quat industrial and urban zone./.
