The worst natural disasters in 2019

Strong typhoons which swept the Americas and Asia, earthquakes in Albania and China, and forest fires in Brazil and Indonesia are terrible natural disasters that humans faced in 2019.


In September 2019, typhoon Dorian devastated the Bahamas, leaving at least 50 people dead, 2,500 missing and 76,000 in need of emergency relief.


Rescue workers of Japan participated in overcoming the consequences of Typhoon Hagibis. The strong typhoon in October claimed the lives of nearly 40 people, leaving more than 200 injured or missing.

Super typhoon Kenneth flattened a coastal town in Mozambique in April. The typhoon killed 41 people and destroyed nearly 40,000 houses.


The year of 2019 also witnessed the most serious forest fires in the history of many countries.  More than 74,000 fires in the past year have left the Amazon forest, the planet's green lung, devastated.


300,000 hectares of forest burnt, thousands of schools closed, nearly 900,000 people dealing with respiratory infections due to dust and smoke of forest fires are startling figures of forest fires in Indonesia.


The most severe drought since 1982 has caused millions of people in South African countries such as South Africa, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe, to face food shortages.


A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck in the port city of Durres, Albania, November 26th, leaving nearly 700 people dead or injured.

Rescuers move victims from a structure collapse after a double earthquake in Sichuan, China. Two earthquakes with magnitude 5.2 and 6 occurred in June and left at least 12 people dead and 134 injured.

 
Huge plumes of ash rising from the Raikoke crater on the Kuril islands in the North Pacific in June 2019 affected aviation operations in the area.


The volcano suddenly erupted on White Island, New Zealand, on December 9th with columns of ash rising as high as 3,600 meters. The disaster killed 18 people and injured dozens./.
