(CPV) - A new page for the nation’s Taekwondo history has been opened by female athlete Truong Thi Kim Tuyen, 20, who bagged the nation's first ever silver medal on June 25th (Vietnamese time) at the 23rd edition of the World Taekwondo Championships, being held in Muju, the Republic of Korea from 24th-30th, 2017.

As the sport bringing home the first-ever medal for Vietnam at the world’s largest sporting event (a silver by Tran Hieu Ngan at the 2000 Sydney Olympics), over the past 17 years, Vietnam’s taekwondo has never stopped seeking new successes at top international tours.

Competing in the 46kg event, the Vinh Long province-origin Kim Tuyen successfully passed the qualifying round, then beat her Thai rival Napaporn in the semi-final (27 places higher in the world rankings), and just only surrendered to host player Jea Young Sim by 9-18.

The result of Vietnam in the previous event was five bronze medals.

Kim Tuyen has spent seven years in professional practicing, gaining outstanding records like a gold at SEA Games 28, a gold and the best player title of the 2015 International Taekwondo in Morocco, and a silver at the 2015 Kazakhstan Open tour.

Currently, she is trying her best to defend her gold at the 46kg event in the upcoming SEA Games 29 this August in Malaysia./.
