Prof. Dr. Tran Binh Giang, Director of the Viet Duc University Hospital, said the bank is responsible for receiving, preserving, restoring and transporting tissue; providing tissue for medical foundations and medical research and training foundations. “The bank will also provide and exchange tissue with other tissue banks and cooperate with foreign organizations and individuals for the purpose of conducting medical check-ups and treatment, training and research,” said Mr. Giang.

According to him, there is great demand for tissue and organ use in medical treatment. In the US, each year, over 350,000 units of tissues are used and in Japan, there have been over 134,000 units of bone tissue transplanted over the past 4 years. Great demand for bone, blood vessel, cardiac valve and tendon transplant is also reported in Vietnam.

He added that there are only two laboratories researching and preserving tissue in Vietnam without any real tissue bank, meanwhile, there are up to 300,000 tissue banks across 46 countries in the world. “The essential demand urged Viet Duc University Hospital to develop the tissue bank technology in 2016, and prepare good facilities and human resources for the tissue bank establishment,” Mr. Giang went on to say.

He also confirmed that the bank will contribute to increasing the quality of medical treatment as it satisfies the application of advanced technologies in tissue transplant.

At the bank’s debut ceremony, Viet Duc University Hospital received some equipment sponsored by the Ministry of Public Security and inaugurated a new medical check-up area to improve the quality of medical services./.
