Minh said that the Vietnamese Government and the Vietnamese-Cambodian community support the Cambodian Government’s plan to resettle over 10,000 people living on Tonle Sap lake for environmental reasons and help them settle down.

He noted that at a meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on October 11th in Indonesia, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen agreed with the previous proposals and then directed Kampong Chhang’s authorities to build a suitable roadmap for the resettlement of the targeted people to areas with necessary infrastructure facilities and ensure their livelihoods.

The proposals were reiterated by Ms. Truong Thi Mai, Politburo member, member of Secretariat, Head of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilization during her visit to Cambodia from October 25th-28th.

Right after hearing the plan, the Vietnamese Embassy sent a dispatch to relevant agencies of Cambodia, reflecting the aspiration of the affected community and suggesting the local administration to implement the directions of PM Hun Sen to make sure that the removed people would enjoy necessary facilities, environmental sanitation and stable livelihoods.

At meetings, Vietnamese Cambodians in Boribo district and Kampong Chhnang city affirmed that they will observe the Cambodian Government’s plan and thanked the Cambodian PM for his directions.

However, they pointed to poor conditions in the settlement area and asked the local administration for permission to move to a new temporary settlement area with basic living conditions or return to their former homes.

The ambassador pledged that the embassy and the Khmer-Vietnam Association in Cambodia will continue submitting the community’s opinions to Cambodian authorities./.
