NA Vice Chairwoman meets overseas Vietnamese and US friends in New York

The National Assembly (NA) delegation led by Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong has visited and worked in New York on February 11th-15th, at the invitation of President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Saber Chaudhury to attend an annual hearing between IPU and the United Nations (UN).

Before participating in IPU’s activities, the NA delegation on February 12th had a meeting with representatives of the overseas Vietnamese community living, studying and working in New York, and American friends.

Speaking at the meeting, the Vice Chairwoman reported the political, economic and social situation of the country at present, the development orientation for 2017 and the following years.

She also added that in spite of being affected by the volatile economic situation in the region and the world, Vietnam has been active and flexible to overcome difficulties and achieve economic growth of 6.2% last year, expected to rise 6.6% in 2017, and could return to stable growth of 6.5-7%/year.

In terms of Vietnam's NA, she said that over more than 70 years since its establishment, the legislature is more innovative in organization and operation, demonstrating its role in legislation, supervision, decisions of important issues; promoting its role in building the law-governed state; democracy expansion in law construction. The 14th NA now has 494 deputies, 17% of them are ethnic minorities and 26.6% are female deputies. For the first time over the past 70 years, Vietnam’s NA has a chairwoman.

At the meeting, the Vice Chairwoman also answered various questions raised by overseas Vietnamese and American friends about notable problems in Vietnam at present, and the operation of the 14th NA./.
