Traditional diplomatic exchanges between Vietnam and Laos in Geneva

The Permanent Mission of Lao People's Democratic Republic to the United Nations (UN) and other international organizations in Geneva (Switzerland) exchanged with the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva on February 17th.

Ambassador Duong Chi Dung, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN and other international organizations, reviewed the outstanding achievements of the traditional friendship and special ties between the two countries over the past year in all fields of cooperation, including politics, security, economy, society, education and training, and people exchange.

Recalling a recent event, he said that on February 8th, a delegation led by the Lao Prime Minister was the first delegation to call on Vietnam in the year of the rooster, as well as the Vietnamese and Lao Prime Ministers having successfully co-chaired the 39th session of the Vietnam – Laos Intergovernmental Commission for bilateral cooperation. At the event, the two leaders oriented friendly cooperation activities between the two countries in 2017, especially as the two countries mark the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations and 40 years of signing an agreement on friendship and cooperation.

The Ambassador also congratulated Laos for successfully undertaking the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2016 and affirming that the Vietnam – Laos special relationship has continued at multilateral forums, including the United Nations forum and particularly between the Vietnamese mission and the Lao mission in Geneva.

Mr Dung hoped that in the future the two missions would continue to maintain and develop the good tradition, particularly in professional work coordination and enhancing exchange activities between officials and personnel.

For his part, Mr Khan-Inh Khitchadeth, Lao Ambassador, Head of the Permanent Mission of Lao People's Democratic Republic to the United Nations (UN) and other international organizations in Geneva, congratulated Vietnam for successfully completing its tasks at the Human Rights Council for the 2014-2016 period as the first member, and expressed his hopes that the two missions would continue to have closer cooperation.

Meeting in new year has been an annual traditional activity among diplomatic officials and personnel of the Vietnamese and Lao missions in the heart of the multilateral diplomatic activities in Europe./.
