Speaking at the ceremony, Consul General of Vietnam to Hong Kong and Macau Tran Thanh Huan said that over the past years, consular work relating to Vietnamese people in Macau was undertaken by the Consulate General of Vietnam in Hong Kong and Macau through appointing officials and staff from Hong Kong to Macau to work on certain days.

However, as there was no official office the working place often changed, so consular work there met some difficulties.

Mr. Huan stressed that with the launching the Consulate Office as a legal entity, Vietnamese citizens working, living, studying in Macau would be better able to access timely and direct consular support from the office. This would ensure better and more effective protection of Vietnamese citizens’ interests in Macau.

He also said that it was more advantageous for people in Macau and international friends to learn about information relating politics, economics, investment, trade, culture, science and technology and tourism of Vietnam through the office, which contributes to further boosting the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Macau.

The diplomat hoped that in the coming time, the consulate office in Macau would receive positive and effective support from local organizations, businesses and fellow-countrymen associations of Vietnamese people in Macau.

There are over 20,000 Vietnamese workers in Macau, mainly female working as domestic workers or serving at casinos, and some Vietnamese businesses working in tourism and services./.
