As of March 16th afternoon, Spain has 9,191 cases of Covid-19 infection, including 309 deaths. Currently, Spain ranks second in Covid-19 cases and deaths in Europe (after Italy) and ranks fourth in the number of countries with infections in the world (after China, Italy and Iran).

The capital Madrid is the most severely affected, with 50% of both infected cases (over 4,165 cases) and two third of deaths (213 cases). Other heavily affected areas are Catalonia and Basque. According to the Director of the Spanish Epidemiology Agency, the number of infected people will continue to increase and will peak in about the next 10 days.

In the context of the complicated development of the epidemic, the Vietnamese Embassy in Spain has widely informed and regularly updated the Vietnamese community in Spain on policies of the Vietnamese Government; encouraging them to follow the instructions of the host government; avoiding travel away from home; avoiding crowded places; strictly implementing epidemic prevention and control measures under the guidance of the World Health Organization; and closely following the instructions of the Vietnamese Embassy and the local administration.

The embassy also maintains close contact with the Vietnamese Student and Youth Association in Spain and a number of leaders of overseas students in Spain to reassure their spirit; encourage Vietnamese students to abide by the regulations on travel restriction, mutual assistance and to directly contact the embassy if needing emergency assistance.

According to incomplete statistics, the Vietnamese community in Spain has about 2,000 people and around 600-700 students.
