Ho Chi Minh city honours 477 outstanding students

Ho Chi Minh city People’s Committee on July 19th held a ceremony to honor 477 outstanding students who have obtained excellent achievements in 2016-2017 school year.

Over the past school year, there are 174,497 outstanding students in Ho Chi Minh city. 4,739 students won prizes at international, national and city-level competitions for outstanding students.

Especially, six students won international prizes. Phan Minh Hoang from High School for the Gifted under Vietnam National University, VNU-HCMC, seized a silver prize at the 2017 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO); Chu Hoang Minh Duc and Pham Thien Tan from Le Hong Phong school for the Gifted obtained fourth prize at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2017 with the project "A sign language interpreter glove that can be connected to smartphones of people with hearing impairment"; Three bronze medallists at the World Robot Olympiads were Le Duy Lam from Nguyen Van To Secondary School in district 10, and Vo Thiet Quang and Nguyen Huu Thien from Spring school.

Director of Ho Chi Minh city Department of Education and Training Le Hong Son said that the city education and training sector has carried out different solutions to implement the policy on renovating basic and comprehensive education and training. The city has always paid much attention to cultivating outstanding students, contributing to preparing high quality human resources for national industrialization and modernization, and the building of a civilized city.

Addressing the ceremony, Ms. Than Thi Thu, Head of the city Party Committee Commission for Popularization and Education, appreciated the achievement made by the city sector and students in the 2016-2017 school-year.

She also asked schools to promote activities on scientific research and discovery, so that students can apply required knowledge in solving problems in life and promote studying to build a studying society./.
