Improving Vietnam - Laos education and training quality

Vietnam - Laos training quality improvement forum will contribute to promoting and developing education and training cooperation between the two sides, bringing great benefits in the development of economics, trade, service, science and technology in the near future.

The Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam and the Ministry of Education and Sports of Laos co-hosted a forum in Vientiane on May 29th to seek ways to improve the quality of training cooperation of the two countries.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc told participants that universities in Vietnam have increasingly been focusing on international quality assurance and partnering with foreign universities in training.

Vietnam has so far joined the Asia-Pacific Quality Network (APQN), the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE), and the ASEAN Quality Assurance Network (AQAN).

In 2011, the Government of Vietnam approved a project "Improving the quality and effectiveness of Vietnam - Laos cooperation in the field of education and human resource development in the period of 2011-2020". The project focuses solutions to increase the number and improve the quality of training to have a team of managers and scientific and technical staff that meet the needs of Laos and adapt to the regional development process as well as future integration with the world.

There were only more than 6,000 Laotian students at about 70 Vietnamese educational institutions in 2011. Nearly 4,000 of them were outside the agreement. Since 2015, the number of Lao students studying in Vietnam has always maintained over 12,000 people. As of March 2019, there were a total of over 16,000 Laotian students in Vietnam, accounting for nearly 80% of the total number of international students in Vietnam.

To support the improvement of Vietnamese language training, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam has compiled the Vietnamese Language Teaching Program and the Vietnamese experimental textbook from grade 1 to grade 12 for Laotian students. Both Vietnamese and Lao languages are taught at Nguyen Du school, Vientiane, Laos. Sets of Lao - Vietnamese, Vietnamese - Lao dictionaries were completed.

Notably, around 30 - 40 teachers are sent to Laos each year to teach Vietnamese and natural sciences./.
