(CPV) - As many as 5,000 large timber trees were planted in Ben En National Park, Thanh Hoa Province on August 18 in a reforestation project organised by Gaia Nature Conservation Center (Gaia) in cooperation with Ben En National Park and OMO Vietnam.

Protecting forests and planting trees should be everyone's habit

The event was also participated by Singer Jun Pham, MC Quang Bao and students and teachers from Ben Sung Town Secondary School.

The project also aimed to restore degraded forests and thus creating safe habitats for endangered wildlife such as Gaur, Grey Langur, White-cheeked Crested Gibbon, Roosevelt's Muntjact and etc. Moreover, the 10ha of forest will create a green shield to mitigate impacts of natural disasters for Thanh Hoa province in particular and other Central provinces in general.

The plantation project also improves ecological functions of the forests and enhances other forest values such as education, scientific research and recreation.

More than 5,000 trees will create a green shield of up to 5ha, protecting the land, forests and villages surrounding the reforestation area. This is the first tree planting phase of the campaign entitled "Get dirty for Vietnamese green shields" launched by OMO in collaboration with Gaia in Thanh Hoa province.

It is expected that in March 2021, OMO will continue to plant another 5,000 trees to cover over 5ha and achieve the goal of restoring 10ha of poor forest there.

For many participants, this is the first time they can plant a tree in the forest by themselves and participate in nature experiences. From the attractive guidance and useful information shared by Gaia’s expert, participants had the opportunity to connect with nature and nurture love and motivation to take actions.

“Recognizing the important role of afforestation to create a green shield for Vietnam, I am very happy to have the opportunity to plant trees in this Ben En forest by myself, and I hope the messages I sent to the trees will be rewarded with a lush green forest in the future. Jun is thankful to OMO and Gaia for creating such a wonderful project for Jun and everyone to participate and contribute a small part to the nature of Vietnam”, Singer Jun Pham, program’s ambassador, shared.

The tree species planted in this campaign include: Erythrophleum fordii and Michelia mediocris. The diverse, rich green forests will help create a strong green shield to help keep the soil and water, and protect Thanh Hoa from extreme summer storms and floods. In addition, this afforestation activity also helps improve the ecological function of the forest, enhancing the value of relaxation, education and science for the forest. This will also be a safe habitat for many rare species.

All activities during the planting session were designed by Gaia to minimize waste and become environmentally friendly. Through planting trees, experiencing nature and practicing green living, the ambassadors and students came to understand and feel greater love for nature, thereby taking practical actions to protect the environment in the future.

"After joining the reforestation activity today, I am very happy to know more about the meanings and values of the forest, thereby having more motivation in protecting nature and protecting the living environment around me" - MC Quang Bao said.

“The community forest planting and monitoring programme was specially designed by Gaia so that planters could not only plant trees but also have the opportunity to gain more knowledge about the forest, and together with Gaia, monitor the development of the forest to see the practical and positive impacts of afforestation,” said Ms. Do Thi Thanh Huyen, Founder and Director of Gaia Nature Conservation Center.

She added that with the strong support from organizations and individuals, Gaia is determined to restore more watershed forests throughout the country, determined to plant at least additional 1 million trees, in order to create strong protective forests for the health and benefit of the communities themselves and create a common home for wildlife.

The forest will be followed up, monitored and taken care for in 4 years to ensure stable development with a minimum survival rate of 70-80%. Gaia also collaborates with the management board of Ben En National Park to research, monitor the forest and publish reports annually.

Following the tree planting event in Thanh Hoa, Gaia will continue to plant nearly 5,000 more trees at Xuan Lien Nature Reserve and Ben En National Park from August 19 to 22 with the participation of the campaign’s other ambassadors.

Besides, Gaia continues to promote the "Contribute a tree to make a forest" campaign to create opportunities for all individuals, businesses and organisations to join in afforestation activities throughout Vietnam. Gaia calls for the attention and support of companies, organisations, individuals and schools to join in this meaningful and practical afforestation campaign./.
