APEC discusses health policies for elderly

The Health Policy Dialogue on promoting healthy ageing and non-communicable disease control for a healthy Asia Pacific was held on August 22nd in Ho Chi Minh city by the APEC Health Working Group.

The dialogue attracted the participation of over 100 delegates from APEC member economies, representatives from UN agencies, international organizations, social organizations, researchers and healthcare service providers.

Addressing the dialogue, Deputy Minister of Health Pham Le Tuan said that Vietnam entered the ageing population phase in 2011, with the number of people at 60 years old or more accounting for 10% of the population, becoming one of the countries with the most rapid ageing population rate. At present, Vietnam reports over 10 million elderly people, and the figure is forecast to reach up to 28 million by 2050.

During the dialogue, representatives from APEC economies and health experts put forth policy recommendations on the burden of non-communicable diseases among the elderly in ageing populations; the prevention of non-communicable diseases among the elderly; and some members' experiences to learn from./.
