Ben Tre province gives support for poverty reduction

The southern province of Ben Tre is carrying out a project on developing livelihood support for poverty reduction in the 2016-2020 period, attracting nearly 9,000 poor and nearly-poor families to join after one year.

According to Nguyen Thi Kim Thoa, Vice Head of the provincial Women’s Union, the union at all levels has given support to 754 of 1,243 poor women’s families to join the project, with capital of over VND18.5 billion. So far, over 60 families have escaped poverty. In addition, the union has encouraged members to assist poor members with loans, seedlings, working days, and vocational training.

Statistics from the provincial Department of the Labor, War-Invalids and Social Affairs show that there are 37,541 poor and 17,395 nearly-poor families in the province. The Bank for Social Policies has disbursed loans for the families amounting to over VND190 billion. Meanwhile, the families have had access to social services, including medical insurance, education, housing and water containers.

Nguyen Huu Phuoc, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said that the project aims to identify the reason for poverty in each family, for creating poverty reduction solutions and suitable livelihoods, bringing practical efficiency for the residents./.
