The information was announced during a press conference held on January 17th by the event’s organizers, Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper, the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) and the National Traffic Safety Committee.

According to Le Xuan Son, editor-in-chief of Vanguard newspaper, the drive will last until the end of January. As of January 15th, 19 provinces and cities have joined the blood donation drive across 30 locations, receiving 23,392 units of blood, obtaining 67% of the plan.

Dr Bach Quoc Khanh, NIHBT President, said that during the lunar New Year festival, the institute needs some 60,000 units of blood for treatment, including 30,000 units of type O blood, while the demand in hospitals across the country is at some 320,000 units. “Therefore, Red Sunday is a very important event in collecting blood in reserves,” he added.

The main ceremony will be held on January 21st in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city and other localities./.
