Emergency response for localities seriously affected by flooding

As the recent flooding has seriously affected the lives of residents in the central region, on October 16th, the Vietnam Red Cross (VRC) Central Committee decided to provide initial assistance in cash and goods worth VND1.97 billion to the four affected localities of Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Quang Tri, in an attempt to help local people overcome difficulties and stabilize their lives.

The assistance included VND1 billion in cash, 900 packages of domestic utensils, 300 sets of tools for repairing houses, 70,000 water purifying tablets, 200 water purifying sets with a capacity of 20 litres each, and 100 buckets of shampoo.

Accordingly, each family reporting a death will be assisted with VND3 million; while goods or cash worth VND500,000 will be distributed to each of the others.

The assistance was distributed by the VRC delegations on October 17th.

Meanwhile, in Quang Binh province, the provincial Red Cross plans to operate the water refinery system to provide safe water for flood affected regions.

According to the Office of the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention, as of October 16th, torrential rain and floods in central localities claimed the lives of 15 people, left nine missing and injured 18 others.

The natural disaster also destroyed over 100,000 houses, nearly 1,600 hectares of rice and over 9,100 hectares of vegetables.

In addition, diverse roads are inundated or damaged, causing traffic congestion./.
