Bicycles carrying white grapefruit flowers releasing their gentle fragrance go slowly across Hanoi streets and alleys, beautifying the capital in early Spring.

According to traders, grapefruit flowers are sold for a month, from the beginning to the end of March, at some VND15,000-30,000 a bunch.

Grapefruit flowers are taken from trees producing too many flowers, mainly from Hanoi’s surrounding localities such as Hung Yen and Bac Ninh, where gardeners have to prune flowers for the trees to produce higher quality fruits in the future.

When spring comes, Hanoi streets are beautified by the white colour of grapefruit flowers.

The flowers are sold on many streets, including Xa Dan, Giang Vo and Thanh Nien.

Ms Thao, a seller, says each day she sells 7-8 kilograms of grapefruit flowers, and some days she sells over 10 kilograms.

Mr. Thang from Hung Yen province often comes to grapefruit gardens to buy flowers for selling.

The flowers are a favourite of many people, with their white colour and fragrance.

They buy flowers to perfume their houses…

… or mix them with tea and kudzu powder.

The flowers are connected with countryside life.

Each flower season, many people come to Hanoi to sell the flowers.

Each load of flowers is worth millions of VND.
