Hau Giang province cares for Khmer ethnic minority people

According to Huynh Van Hung, Standing Vice President of the Hau Giang provincial Fatherland Front, the province has celebrated the Khmer New Year festival in order to encourage Khmer ethnic minority people to further promote their cultural values.

The province has regularly encouraged Khmer people’s aspirations for addressing their legitimate interests; and increased inspection over the implementation of programs and projects for ethnic minority people, ensuring that the capital is invested adequately.

Effective models have been expanded among Khmer ethnic minorities, including those to disseminate laws among the people and encourage them not to violate laws.

Regular dialogues have been held between grassroots authorities and poor Khmer ethnic minority families. Meanwhile, the implementation of loan and vocational training policies have been increased, with an aim to help poor Khmer labourers get stable jobs. The province has developed aquaculture and breeding models, assisting Khmer people earn stable income, looking towards to sustainable poverty reduction.

There are over 26,000 Khmer people in Hau Giang province, or over 3% of the province’s population. In 2016, in realization of the Government program, the province spent over VND7.5 billion to help Khmer people expand economic production; and VND4.5 billion to help them build houses and buy production land. Capital was also disbursed to build rural traffic constructions and pre-schools, to deliver better services for Khmer people.

Among nearly 30,000 poor families in the province, Khmer families accounted for over 2,000./.
