Highland district accelerates poverty reduction

Van Chan, a poor highland district of the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai, with 70% of its population being Thai, Tay, Dao or H’Mong ethnic minority people, has seen effective poverty reduction activities, leading to an increase in local residents’ spiritual and material lives.

Remarkable improvement in villages inhabited by Thai ethnic minority people in Son A commune. 

All 31 communes and towns in Van Chan district have power constructions, roads, medical stations and schools.

Health workers give free medical check-ups and medicines to ethnic minority people.

Thanks to preferential loans from the district Bank for Social Policies, many families in Thanh Luong commune have developed mushroom production, which helps increase their income.

The irrigation works are built to serve agricultural production.

Pham Nguyen Binh, Head of the district Department of Ethnic Minorities, confirmed remarkable results in poverty reduction, leading to improvement of people’s lives.

Van Chan district encourages residents to develop traditional handicraft industries. 

A shift of agricultural crops contributes to increase the quality of agricultural production for many poor families in Van Chan district.
