According to the city People’s Committee, in the 2007-2017 period, each day, the city generated 8,700 tons of solid household waste, 1,500-2,000 tons of industrial and hazardous waste, and 22 tons of medical waste. Forecasts show that by 2030, the amounts of household waste, and industrial and hazardous waste are expected to increase by 2,000-3,000 and 1,000 tons per day, respectively.

As the forecast and increasingly high demand in waste treatment, the Ho Chi Minh city People’s Committee targets to treat waste smartly to ensure environmental protection, by building modern waste treatment plants so that the amounts of buried waste will be reduced to 50% by 2020 and to 20% by 2025. At present, 76% of solid waste is treated by burying, 14.7% by recycling, and 9.3% by burning without generating power.

Waste treatment plans announced during the meeting indicated that the city had issued a number of preferential policies to attract investors, including exempting land hire fees for 11 years, supporting investment procedures, and buying alternative source of power produced by waste projects with preferential price at VND2,114 per kWh.

Addressing the meeting, Secretary of the city Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan said that the city’s guideline is to change technologies of treating waste from burying to burning, striving to use 80% of waste for producing energy by 2025.

Noting that the National Assembly adopted a specialized mechanism for Ho Chi Minh city, he confirmed that the city would create the best conditions for investors to carry out waste treatment projects./.
